Best Items for Keeping Cool This Summer

What's Covered

Did you know that according to statistics, we will have almost 2 months of dangerous heat days in the year 2050, and that is in the US alone! And it would be even greater in warmer regions especially in the South. Scary isn’t it? Although summer is viewed as a happy occasion, it is also the time where heat stroke, heart attacks, and any other sickness associated to heat comes to play and it would be best to equip yourself against them.

Indoor

Summer can take a toll on your body especially kids. They are not just prone to heatstroke but can be more than a handful during summer. The heat affects their behavior too. The brutal heat of summer is irritating, to say the least. Here are some of best items to keep your body cool this summer.

1.      Air Conditioners

Sale
Black + Decker BPACT10WT Portable Air Conditioner
an air conditioner that you can move anywhere in the house without the hassle and cost of installing it.

Probably one of the greatest inventions in this world for me are air conditioning units or widely accepted as ACs. Air conditioning units can help you lower down your body temperature. The higher the body temperature is, the hotter you become. Now, if you are inside a room with a great air conditioning, your body temperature will cool down.

There are a lot of types of air conditioners but the most effective are the central air conditioning units. They can cool multiple rooms, even the whole house. However, the downside of the central air conditioning unit is the cost. It costs a lot of energy to run these things and of course that means higher bills. Now, if you just want to have a specific room to cool, you can opt for a window type or split type units. There is also the portable air conditioning unit if you prefer. These can be moved from room to room depending on your mood and does not require installation. However, these types of ACs are a bit noisy and take up space inside your room.

Before you decide on purchasing one, you should consider some factors such as energy consumption, space requirements, installations, cooling power, and of course your budget.

2.      Fridge

Refrigerators or fridge are very common and can be considered a must have for a typical American home. They stock your food and keep your beverages cool. They are another important appliance inside your home that can help your body cool down. How? Refrigerators stock food items that you can use to help you cool down, especially during summer.

Now, there are numerous types of refrigerators. Before buying one though, you should consider the energy consumption, cooling power and your budget. Now, there are people like me are lazy to get up and walk towards the kitchen just to have a chilled drink or a cold snack especially when it’s hot. Well, I have just a solution for you. They are called portable fridge. That’s right moms, it’s portable!

Portable fridge can be used in many ways. Some use them to store beauty products but most of us uses them to store food and drinks to help us beat the summer heat. And because they are portable, they can be easily carried around and it runs in an AC/DC voltage so you can plug them up virtually anywhere. (I even open them up just so my face feels cooler for a few seconds).

3.      Fans

Fans are another great way to keep cool this summer. If you are on a budget and only some of your rooms are air conditioned, you can never go wrong with an electric fan. There are many different types or electric fans, but some of the most commons are the ceiling fans, desk fans, and exhaust fans.

Ceiling fans are normally found around the kitchen area and living room area. While they are a great way to help you cool down, they can also help with the overall interior design of the room. But while ceiling fans can be displayed as a decoration to your home, exhaust fans are the opposites. Although compact in size, it can look like it came from the past next to your futuristic cooking appliances. You can have them installed on a wall, window, or ceiling. They help maintain the overall condition and ventilation of your house. Aside from letting the unwanted odor from cooking or from your bathroom out, it also lets warm air out making your house cooler.

4.      Air Cooler

BREEZEWELL 2-in-1 Evaporative Air Cooler
with this low noise air cooler with 3 speeds, cooling the whole room is easy as one, two, three

Air coolers or swamp coolers uses evaporation to cool the air. Unlike electric fans, air coolers draw warm air into a water moistened pads with cooling effect before releasing it. Using this process, air coolers are way coolers than the regular electric fans out there.

Air coolers are usually used to cool garage, warehouses or a room where you do not have air conditioning. They are portable and can easily be carried around wherever you go. So, if you want to stay cool this summer, an air cooler is a must have.

5.      Ice Fans

Honeywell CL201AE 470 CFM Indoor Evaporative Air Cooler (Swamp Cooler) with Remote Control in Silver
Designed to keep you and your family cool using ice. Ice fans can be compared to an air conditioner, only it is cheaper and cost less energy

Have you ever thought of tying an ice into your desk fan in an attempt to stay cool? Well, I did that one time. It’s effective, until you saw the puddle of water the ice created. They are messy, not to mention dangerous. But you do not have to do that anymore though. Another innovative technology that greatly improves your body temperature are called ice fans. It uses ice to cool the air around the room. Just put in blocks of ice into it and turn it on.

6.      Cooling Mattress

Linenspa 3 Inch Gel Infused Memory Foam

Since power outages are common during summer, you probably would like to look for a way to sleep without worrying about the heat and sweat. Cooling mattresses can do wonders especially when you are sleeping then suddenly the lights went off. With cooling mattresses, you can still go back to sleep peacefully without sweating.

Cooling mattresses are designed to absorb heat. It uses various technologies to make sure you sleep soundly even if there is no power and your air conditioner is not doing its job. Before buying one, you should consider the sturdiness, value, and softness of the mattress. While some people like soft and fluffy mattresses, some people prefer mattresses that are bouncy but firm. Now, there are many types of cooling mattresses but I love using a cooling mattress that I can take off and carry anytime and everywhere I go.

7.      Cooling Pillow

Cooling pillows come in many forms. While they are all designed to help your body cool down, cooling pillows are also designed for your comfort. Before you purchase one, you might want to consider why you are buying a cooling pillow first.

There are many types of cooling pillows in the market today. Some are memory foam, have temperature control, some are customizable, some are used for neck pain, some are ergonomic, have pressure release, some are known for their value, and many more.

If you are known to toss and turn when you sleep, get something that has memory foam on it. If you normally sleep like a log and has a stiff neck afterward, it would be best to get an ergonomic pillow. If you are on a budget but still would like to get a cooling pillow, don’t worry since there are pillows that are known for their value and price. There are also cooling pillows for pregnant women.

The bottom line is, if you are buying a cooling pillow, think of why you are buying it before the actual purchase. It will make your sleeping so much better.

8.      Indoor Plants

According science, plants can improve the earth’s temperature by means of photosynthesis. And when the temperature heats up, they release excess water making themselves and their surroundings, cooler. Not also plants can help you cool down, they can also add flare and life into your home.

Some of the most common indoor plants are rubber plants, palms, mother-in-law’s tongue, and pothos. These plants can survive inside your house. All you need to do is water them from time to time and you are all set.

9.      Curtains

NICETOWN 100% Blackout Curtains with Black Liners
Thermal Insulated Curtains for cooling effect. It helps the room stay cool by not allowing the heat to penetrate. You will feel visibly cooler once these are attached

Sunlight heats up the inside of your home using its ultraviolet rays. Block them out and you will feel much cooler. How? Use dark and thick draperies around your house is a way to go. It absorbs the sunlight which causes your room to heat up. There are also curtains that has thermal insulation so it absorbs heat.

However, if drowning out the sun is not your thing, you might want to consider adding smoked glass or tinted glass into your window. This will still effectively block out the sun’s harmful rays and at the same time still let light pass through.

Outdoors

As cozy as it may seem inside your house with all that appliances and ideas to keep cool this summer, it is also not healthy being cooped up inside the house the whole summer long. You should also find time to bond outside with your family and kids. Why not try using some things below to improve your mood and keep your body temperature low.

10.  Rechargeable Fan

So, what is a rechargeable fan exactly? As the name suggests, they are fans with built-in batteries or rechargeable batteries that allow them to run even without electricity. This is a handy device that you will need especially if you want to keep cool outside your house. Rechargeable fans can be big or small depending on your preference. But if you have 2 to 3 kids with you, it would be better if you are going to use a bigger one. Or you could also buy small ones for you and each of them. This type of fan comes in various forms and sizes. From ceiling, wall, and table fans to portable fans for your kids.

Rechargeable fans are very handy especially during summer where power outages are known. They can be charged using your car as well, so if in case it ran out of battery, just plug it in using a USB port and you are good to go. If you are on the beach or an outdoor pool and you want to stay cool, a portable rechargeable fan is your quick fix. Most rechargeable fans have built-in flashlights as well, which is important during a power outage at night or during camping for your kids.

As handy as it may seem, there are also drawbacks to having a rechargeable fan like battery malfunction or once the battery dies, then it is already useless. I would recommend buying something that has a longer battery life span or a fan that uses solar energy. If you would like to use a small hand fan, I recommend this item.

Pocket Handheld Fans with 14-22 Hrs Runtime
Has a great runtime of almost 24 hours. It’s light and easy to carry and can keep you cool anytime, anywhere

However, if you would like to buy a bigger one, then you can buy this instead.

11.  Mist Fans

Mist fans are also rechargeable fans. However, as the name suggest, they uses mist to help cool the air. However, it would be best to use mist fans in hot and dry areas rather than in an area with high humidity as it uses water. When it is humid, the air feels wet and stuffy and this makes you feel hot. So mist fans works best when it is hot and dry rather than hot and humid.

12.  Space Coolers

Ontel Arctic Ultra Evaporative Portable Air Conditioner
Portable Mini Air Conditioners that you can carry and charge anytime, anywhere. It is best to use when you are camping.

Space coolers are also known as mini AC. These babies will cool their surroundings just like an air conditioner. They are portable, rechargeable and is often used in camping or outdoors. They have sufficient cooling power to provide cool air on your tent. They are compact and easy to carry and often comes with a USB charging port.

However, they can only cool small areas. If you are camping and would like to use the item on your tent for when you sleep, I would recommend bringing a duct tape or a packaging tape along as well. To optimize the effect, put the duct tape or packaging tape onto the surrounding edges of the tent. This will help making the cool air stay into the tent for longer.

13.  Cooling Towel

Chill Pal PVA Cooling Towel
Enjoy a refreshing feeling even after you work-out.

Using a cooling towel during hot days is one of the best ways to cool down. Once you put a cooling towel around your neck, you can instantly feel its effect on your body temperature. It’s also easy to use. You just dip it into very cold water, wring it out and place it into any part of your body that needs cooling. It also works well with kids especially since they can get very excited and hyper and can get sweaty pretty fast.

Now, there are many cooling towels out in the market promising this and that. However, you should look for a cooling towel that is made out of PVA. The fabric remains cool for many hours and it is dry to the touch even when wet.

However, cooling towels do not retain their effectiveness over time and you need to repeatedly soak them to reactivate their effect. Since cooling towels need to be soaked in water, they can give off a bad smell when not washed properly. You wouldn’t want to put it around your neck or wipe your kid’s face and body with something like that, do you? You can avoid it by making sure to dry them properly when not in use. I personally use the Chill Pal PVA Cooling towel. It is cheap, easy to use, cool to the touch, and does not wet our clothes. It is also soft and super absorbent.

14.  Cooling Face Mist

Hyaluronic + Aloe face Mist
Just spray this to your face after a whole day of work and feel refreshed, instantly

Who says that face mists are just used for make-ups? These things are so handy and are a great way to refresh and keep your cool this summer. There are of course many types of face mists in the market and they are usually used to set your make-up, but did you know that they can be used to help your body temperature cool down?

Yes, you got it right! Face mists that have the cooling ability can be a mood changer especially if you are at work or stuck in traffic on a hot summer day. There are plenty of cooling face mists that you can buy but I would recommend something that has aloe and mint on it. Aloe will soothe your burnt face. It will also remove the pain from the burning heat of the sun, and mint will make you feel refreshed. I am using Advanced Clinicals Hyaluronic + Aloe face mist. It soothes my face and rehydrates it whenever, wherever.

15.  Cooling Wipes

Wipes are used to clean your hands, face, neck, and body especially if you are traveling or if there is no water to wash them. However, there are now many forms of wipes from baby wipes to facial wipes and cooling wipes.

Cooling wipes are wipes infused with cooling properties to hydrate and keep your skin cool to the touch. It is used best to recharge your skin after a long day of work or if you are stuck in traffic and you want to freshen up before that meeting starts. There are also cooling wipes that are hypoallergenic that are safe for kids to use so you do not have to go back and forth to your car or inside the house every time their face is dirty or full of sweat. You just need to wipe those grime off with cooling wipes. I prefer those unscented ones for me and my kids. I will link the ones we use in the notes.

16.  Aloe Gel

Aloe is generally used to hydrates skin and help it stay cool. An aloe gel is normally used to soothe burnt skin. Keep a bottle of aloe gel with you wherever you go to help soothe sunburnt. Aloe is also known to relieve inflammation so it is one of the best ways to relieve the pain caused by sunburnt.

17.  Cooling Bandana

Just like a cooling towel, cooling bandanas are infused with cooling gels that absorb heat. You also need cold water to activate the cooling effect of the gel in order for it to work. However, a cooling bandana keeps you cool by absorbing heat on your neck and head. This is best if you would like to work out or if you are in your backyard soaking up the sun but do not want to feel the hot effects of it.

If you already have a cooling towel, it almost the same as the cooling towel. The only difference is that a cooling bandana can be worn in the head and also around your neck and it a bit stylish than that a cooling towel. I will link the one I found effective below.

Stylish Cooling Bandana

18.  Cooling Gels

Cooling gels are normally infused into bandanas, mattresses, towels, and such to help them cool your body down. However, cooling gels also helps remove body pains, tooth aches and can also lower down your body temperature to help you cool down. In fact, cooling gel patches are often used to infants or kids that has fever.

19.  Insulated Flasks

According to studies, another way of keeping cool is by drinking lots of water. An insulated flask or a vacuum flask is a storage device that allows the content to be hotter or cooler than that of the temperature in the room. It is best for cold weather since you can store your coffee or soup in it. It is also best to use on a hot summer day and you want to take a sip of fresh and crisp cold water or your preferred beverages. Now there are a lot of types and styles of vacuum flasks out there, so you should check their hot or cold retention first before doing so.

A good vacuum flask can retain its heat or coldness within 24 hours. If the flask lost a lot of its content heat or coldness within 24 hours, then it is basically useless. Check the reviews first before buying one. Another thing to consider when buying a vacuum flask is its size. If you are usually traveling with your kids, it would be best to buy something big or buy each of them their own (for hygiene purposes). This way, you can make sure that they are drinking clean, safe, and cool beverages every time. A Vacuum flask with a good grip would be great for kids as well. However, you can also use a tumbler grip if you want to. [1]

20.  Water Jugs

Coleman 1 Gallon Beverage Cooler
  • Country Of Origin : United States
  • The Package Height Of The Product Is 15 Inches
  • The Package Length Of The Product Is 20 Inches

Water jugs are very useful during summer, outdoors. Since you are not inside your home and have no access to a fresh and cool water, you can bring a water jug with you. You can store cool and crisp water to it and it will stay cool for hours. They are handy especially if you are planning a trip to the beach or lake.

21.  Hand-held Fans

Although rechargeable fans are easy to carry and use, there are times that we cannot use them like if the battery died and we need to charge them. In these instances, it is best to have a backup plan to make sure you still stay cool even if your electric or rechargeable fan died on you. And what would be better than having a hand-held fan ready.

Before electricity is introduced, hand-held fans are greatly used by women and men alike from different parts of the world. In Europe, hand-held fans are used as a decoration and as a status symbol of the ton wherever you go. In Asian countries like Japan and China where it is considerably warmer, it is used both as a status symbol and a way to cool yourself. However, some say that handheld fans can be traced back to Ancient Egypt as a sacred instrument. Many historical artifacts revolve around handheld fans because of the art and crafts of making them.

Modern handheld fans are now usually used as a house decoration adorning our walls. But the real main purpose of a handheld fan is to cool yourself by fanning. Before buying a handheld fan, you should consider the weight and sturdiness. A good handheld fan can be folded, round, plastic or made out of woods and clothes. I would personally recommend a round folding fan. It is very light, can be folded almost 4 times its original size, and can easily be carried even in your pocket.

22.  Portable Pools

During summer season, it is very common to go to the beach or lake and take a dip into the water to refresh and to let your body cool. However, if you do not have time or just simply wanted to submerge into a pool of refreshing water, you can buy an inflatable pool.

There are a lot of types of inflatable pool that you can choose from. If you have kids below 5 years old, you can even buy one for them. But you can get a very large pool for you and your family to really enjoy the feeling of swimming even at your backyard. Did you know that according to research, submerging into cool water can dissipate body heat? So, a dip in the pool can do wonders for you and your kids [2]

Avoid Direct Sunlight

Needless to say, you need to avoid basking in the sun for too long or not go out of direct sunlight at all. You don’t need rocket science to know that if you do, you will get sunburnt or worse, suffer from heat stroke. While there are many different ways on how to keep cool this summer, avoiding direct contact from the sun will help you greatly. Here are some things that you can use to help you avoid getting that harmful rays.

23.  Umbrella

Sale
Repel Umbrella Windproof Travel Umbrella
Stylish and effective in warding off the sun’s rays.

Since the early days, people have been using umbrella to ward off the heat of the sun. It is used everywhere in the world and in some countries, they are even thought of as a symbol of aristocracy and fashion statements. However, the main reason why umbrellas are made is to shield you from the heat of the sun.

There are many umbrellas nowadays and one of the most common of them is the normal ones that we use today. I prefer darker shades because it wards off the heat of the sun more than the ones that has clear or light colors.

24.  Hats

Hats or caps are one of the basic things you need in order to keep cool. There are many types of hats that are used to keep the heat at bay but the most effective hats are sun hats or straw hats for men.

Sun hats are designed specifically to protect your head and shoulders from the sun’s harmful rays. It has a wide brim and is common in women especially during summer. It is normally made out of fabric or straw. Straw hats are what men usually wear. It looks like a sun hat but is normally manly in appearance instead of the chick look that sun hats usually go for. Another hat worth mentioning are caps. While sun hats and straw hats are used to block out heat from the sun, they tend to slip from your head when you are doing jogging to walking outside. If you have an active lifestyle and you normally went out to jog or walk, wearing a cap can help you with keeping cool. It fits snugly into your head and cannot easily be removed by wind or other elements. You can make sure that you have both hands available while you jog.

25.  Sunscreen Lotion

People commonly use sunscreen lotion when they are on the beach, working on their tan to prevent sunburn. However, we should also consider applying a sunscreen lotion wherever we go during summer to make sure we are safe from the raging heat of the sun.

Sunscreen lotions nowadays have many types and use. Before buying, you should consider checking its content. It should have at least an SPF 15 or higher to make sure you are protected from UV-A and UV-B. There are some ingredients that can also trigger your allergy, so make sure you check the label first. A water-based sunscreen is best if you have kids as there are many harsh ingredients that can cause harm to them.

It is best to apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going out in the sun to make sure it has been absorbed by the skin. Reapply them after you took a swim or walked directly into the sun for more than 10 minutes. Reapply sunscreen throughout the day to make sure you are protected. But note that according to research, sunscreen lotions can feel hot on your skin so, make sure you are not sweating before applying as it can cause irritation. [3]

26.  Sunglasses

DUBERY Classic Polarized Sunglasses
Classic Polarized Sunglasses for Men and Women that protects your eyes from the sun and also gives that movie star look.

Sunglasses are normally used to disguise oneself in movies. Movie stars often use them when they are in public mainly because they do not want to attract attention. But they also use sunglasses to protect their eyes from the paparazzi’s camera flashes. For normal people like us, it is generally used to protect our eyes from the rays of the sun especially during summer or if you are going out on the street without a hat or an umbrella to protect you from the heat of the sun.

Sunglasses have different uses. Some are prescribed to correct one’s vision and at the same time protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. Some sunglasses are used to protect eyes from physical objects like for example if you are driving. And there are sunglasses that are used primarily just for fashion purposes.

If you feel like you need to wear sunglasses to not only protect your eyes but also to correct your vision, it is best to consult your doctor. Sunglasses’ price varies on the style, materials used, and generally, their brand. The more popular the brand is, the pricey the sunglasses are. But the pricier of the sunglasses do not mean it is better than the cheaper version. The first thing you should consider in buying sunglasses is how many UV rays they can defect. There are sunglasses that offer 100 percent protection against UV rays. There are also sunglasses that have polarized lenses, but did you know that it does not deflect UV rays but the glare from reflective surfaces like glass or water.

27.  Beach Parasol

Beach parasols are used just like a typical umbrella. However, they are normally unmovable and installed into a post. Although, they lack mobility, beach parasols are sturdy and provides more shades than your average umbrellas. They are also used as shades when you are having a barbecue party at your backyard. There are a lot of different types of beach umbrellas or beach parasols to choose from. They range from the basic beach umbrellas you see; some are tent looking, and some even looks like canopy. Of course, they have different price range as well. I would personally recommend something simple and not to extravagant especially if you are only going to use it during summer and hide it entire year afterwards.

Clothes

Did you know that clothes are also great in keeping cool? From fabric to the color of your clothes. It is not just fashionable and trendy; it is also a great way to keep the heat of the summer sun at bay. You do not have to buy super expensive clothes to ward off the heat, you just need simple, light color clothes to help you cool down. Clothes affect you and your kid’s body temperature so it is essential to make sure you pick the right ones this summer.

28.  Color

The color of your clothes can affect heat. Research shows that the darker the color is, the better it can absorb the heat. So, during summer, it is best to wear light colors to deflect the heat coming from the sun. Light colors absorb less heat than dark-colored ones. As much as possible, avoid wearing black clothes as they absorb so much heat. Wearing white or cream clothes is better as they look fashionable and comfy during summer. [4]

29.  Breathable fabric

Fabrics also affect the way your body absorbs heat. According to research, fabrics allow air to pass through them are breathable fabrics. The best fabric of choice when it comes to breathability is linen. It allows air to pass through the fabric making you feel cool and dry. It also allows sweat to evaporate so sweat won’t stick to your skin. Another good fabric is cotton. However, unlike linen, it absorbs sweat or moisture so you feel wet.

Another fabric that is surprisingly breathable is polyester. Well, technically it is lightweight and water repellent thus it is used in sportswear. However, polyester retains odors especially when not washed and dried properly. Silk is often used in underwear but did you know that it is also breathable. So, choose silk underwear during summer to help you in keeping cool this summer. It really depends on you whether you want to wear short shorts and tank tops, or long-sleeved ones. Your main goal is to make sure you are comfortable and cool whatever you are wearing. [5]

30.  Extra Shirt

While it is great to wear cool and comfy clothes during summer, it won’t hurt to bring an extra shirt or shorts with you especially if you work out. This is also great for your kids as they are super active, and tend to sweat more than adults do. Not only it will keep you cool, but you will also feel refreshed with a change of clothes. If you are planning to go somewhere else after work, a change of clothes will help you clear your mind and improve your mood better.

You can bring an extra shirt or a change of clothes anywhere. This is not just to help your body cool down but also will refresh you and your spirit as well. Being prepared for whatever is a skill that all of us need, especially if you have kids on your own and would like them to be on top of their game as well.

31.  Footwear

Just like in our clothes, footwear also greatly affects our body temperature. If you are wearing something that encloses your feet like rubber shoes or boots, your feet’s temperature will rise and will add to your body temperature as a whole. It is the reason why most people are wearing comfortable flip flops or strappy flat sandals on the beach. And according to studies, a good footwear helps you endure the summer heat. [6]

If you cannot help putting on a rubber shoes or boots or any close shoes for that matter, you might want to invest on socks that allows the air to pass through.

32.  Cooling Socks

Thirty48 Running Socks for Men and Women
Keep your feet cool and dry this summer by using this type of socks. Not only you will feel cool, these socks are also designed to fight off unpleasant odor.

Cooling socks does come with cooling gels but some also are infused with other cooling materials. They are calling cooling socks because they are made to remove moisture on your feet allowing it to cool down. Cotton is comfortable but your feet won’t stay dry with them. You will be needing a moisture wicking socks to perform that task. There are many types of moisture-wicking socks you can choose from. Some have anti-bacterial properties on it, some are made from bamboo, and some are even made out of copper. Whatever your preference though, comfort should be your top priority.
